I'm able to remove the domain part (https://..) from the image path by switching the editor tab to 'code'

And it looks like it works

I have no idea why your JCE adding the domain name automatically to every image path you add with JCE (I tried it my self on my local computer and JCE is working as supposed), maybe you have specific JCE configuration causes that behaviour (I'm not really familiar with JCE unfortunately). But I think this is not a good practice, because when you move your website from staging to production, then you will have alot of missing image on your website, because all of images have fixed path.
Regarding Minifrontpage, the module assumes your articles have external image because the image path is started with https://, that's why it doesn't generate thumbnails. The solution is, you need to change the image path of your articles one by one, from fixed path to relative path. Or, you can simply use Minifrontpage Pro that does have external image support.
