Unfortunately this has exploded my main menu and now every link generates a 404 error

Wow really strange (especially those 404 errors).
This looks like something related to compression function of your template. Can you contact the template provider and let them know your situation?
in the meanwhile can you try to disable the module then see whether the problem with links still persist or not?

The problem with the menu still persists even after deactivating the slider. Even re-enabling Java compression does not do the trick. I guess I have to go back and reinstall my backup again.
There seems to be an incompatibility between gavern and your slider.
I will mail them - hope they will reply as quickly as you...

If disabling the module does not do the trick, then it's probably doesn't related to the module because there's no fancy thing in the module, it's just a small pieces of code so it won't break any of PHP part of your joomla.
I think it something related to cache function of the template, but I'm not really sure too. Maybe you should clear the template cache everytime you disabling the compression function but as I said, I'm not really sure. Gavick should have the answer for you.
