Actually your solution breaks up the thumbnail styling.
I did that instead, but I am not sure if it is the best solution:
<div class="mfp_thumb_pos_<?php echo $carousel_thumbnail_position; ?>" itemprop="url"><?php echo $thumb_img[0]; ?> ................</div>
